Communication Solutions for Deaf-Blind South-Dakotans

Navigating communication with friends and family as a deaf or hard-of-hearing person can be tricky – add blindness or poor eyesight, and the task will likely require special equipment.

Luckily there are tools available for South Dakotans who are deaf-blind – it’s just a matter of requesting them.

About the Program

The National Deaf-Blind Equipment Distribution Program (NDBEDP), in association with the South Dakota Department of Human Services:

• Secures communication technology and equipment.
• Provides assessments to eligible participants.
• Offers in-home training for eligible participants.

About the Equipment

There are several pieces of equipment that South Dakota’s NDBEDP offers its clientele, including:

• Accessories, such as specialized keyboards, mounts, switches, headsets and support devices.
• Braille devices, such as Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
• Computers and mobile devices, such as deaf-blind-enabled desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets.
• Software, such as screen readers and screen-magnifier programs.
• Signalers, such as vibrating devices that alert users to ringing phones and new messages.
